Sanitizing vs. Disinfecting

While they may seem similar, sanitizing and disinfecting surfaces or objects are two very different things. Does your current cleaning contractor understand the differences?

Sanitizing is a great way to reduce germs, it is used everyday by millions of people to clean contact surfaces. But is sanitizing really cutting it? Sanitizing works by reducing 99.999% of a bacteria (as you see plastered all over their bottles). The process of sanitizing lowers the bacteria levels of a surface down to what is considered a "safe" standard by the EPA, but sanitizing will never kill 100% of the bacteria. So if you sanitize your counters, you are STILL preparing your food on a surface that has bacteria present.

Disinfecting on the other hand, is a process that usually requires a much stronger solution that is designed to destroy germs rather than just reduce them. As an example, hospitals and dental offices are often times cleaned with a disinfectant to maintain a safe environment for all of the patients that are in and out of the facilities.

While both sanitizing and disinfecting have their applications, is your cleaning contractor using the method appropriate for your facility?
